20 Pairs of Plus-Size Jeans That Don’t Suck

A post shared by Paloma Elsesser (@palomija) on Aug 30, 2017 at 6:50am PDT

No matter your shape, tracking down the perfect pair of jeans is, to put it lightly, a task. (We are all beautiful and unique snowflakes: one woman’s hero cut is another’s butt-flattening nightmare.) Of course, this process is doubly — if not quadruple-y — tricky for those in search of good plus-size jeans.

Why? Because, despite the various reports calling out the vast and largely untapped buying power of the plus-size market, most premium denim labels have yet to expand their size offerings. But hope is not entirely lost. A handful of buzzy labels have shown the masses that it is possible to shape denim, notoriously constrictive though it may be, into bottoms that flatter a variety of body types.

To wit: for a recent feature in W, up-and-comer Lorod dressed curve model Paloma Elsesser in its highly recognizable contrast hem, zip-through designs (though the set appears to have been a one-off). This past July, New York It label 3×1 teamed up with Glamour to design a (single) pair of limited-release cropped jeans. AYR, another Vogue favorite, also dabbles in extended-size denim, albeit lightly. And then there’s Khloe Kardashian and Emma Grede’s Good American, which has made size inclusivity part of its DNA.

Suffice it to say, the tides are turning. Plus-size women in search of legitimately stylish jeans have more options than ever before, thanks to the aforementioned labels, plus trusty mass retailers like ASOS, H&M, Mango, Modcloth and Levi’s. Still, pickings being relatively slim and hidden as they are, we figured we’d help out with the legwork. Below, 20 of the best plus-size jeans for women right now, all of which are actually cool, not a poor imitation.

Thoughts on Staying Happy and Rejecting Divisiveness on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a holiday that has the potential to change our lives for our better. For this reason, it is my favorite of all holidays. The food doesn’t hurt, either.

According to academic research, giving thanks leads to gratitude which leads to happiness. In our 10-minute Law Firm Podcast the other day, we discussed this relationship. We then went on to discuss other happiness cultivation techniques, including recognizing that contentedness is largely an internal process, tracking your achievements, and recognizing that your happiness level now is what it is likely to be in the future.

It is easy in today’s age to be anxious and angry. Our time-saving devices tend to not give us more time, but the ability to cram more activities into one day. Life is hectic and we are stretched thin. We live in a very divided age, which leads to frustration and anger. Whatever your politics, I’m sure you’ve seen something reported in your news media or social network of choice that makes you so upset you can feel it in your gut.

But can I float a couple of ideas to counter all of this stuff?

1) We do have our problems, but we live in an amazing age.

We take for granted things that people throughout human history desperately wished for. Our children typically survive to adulthood. Women typically survive childbirth. We don’t die from a variety of agonizing diseases.

Additionally, we enjoy humdrum conveniences of air conditioning, the ability to travel anywhere in the world in a day, or GPS navigation. We enjoy the freedom of unfettered access to ideas through books, Wikipedia. We communicate in real-time with loved ones in distant locations.

2) Divisiveness is profitable, so don’t be manipulated.

People are making money off of your outrage. News organizations are having a hard time making money, and they are facing competition off of their left and right flanks, so they are constantly adjusting their headlines and images to achieve a visceral reaction from people. Twitter and Facebook thrive off the discord. So the next time you see an Internet article that pisses you off, recognize that your emotions are being manipulated for profit.

And your favorite opinionated pundit on TV or radio? Find out what their salary is. They are making a lot of money stoking anger.

I don’t mean to say there are not legitimate issues taking place in our society that need to be worked on. There certainly are. But do recognize that people are making money by exploiting your anger and emotions off of issues, and the trick is to identify those instances.

3) Our digital world is making us anxious.

I highly recommend taking a day or two away from your smartphone. It is hard to put these devices down, but excessive usage of them are proven to cause anxiety. One of the antidotes to life’s stressors? Spending time in nature.

This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for the people in my life, the journey I’ve been on, and the privileges I enjoy living in the United States. I wish all of our Rocket Matter family and the larger community as a whole a peaceful, happy holiday today.

Luna Bijl’s Stars on Vogue Spain’s ‘Passable’ Cover for December 2017

Our forum members are still in awe over Vogue Spain’s flawless November cover starring the always stunning Raquel Zimmermann — that is, until the newly unveiled December 2017 issue arrived for us to deliberate over. The magazine continues to favor models as Dutch beauty Luna Bijl closes out the year on this month’s cover. A firm favorite over at Vogue Paris and the current face of Chanel eyewear, Luna was photographed by Nathaniel Goldberg for Spanish Vogue‘s latest, modeling a striking creation from Jean Paul Gaultier.

Vogue España December 2017 : Luna Bijl by Nathaniel Goldberg

“This cover does not say anything. Vogue Spain has lost its identity MANY years ago, there’s no message nor clear directions with their cover subjects and compositions, it feels bland. Luna looks gorgeous but as a cover, it’s a fail,” declared Bertrando3 the moment the cover struck.

“I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. Luna has done better with her VP covers,” said gianna.

It was almost a win for dodencebt. “Luna looks incredible but I wish I could see her hand on the stone wall. It would have done wonders for the composition,” he stated.

Scotty also pointed out the missing arm: “The only thing bothering me is the lack of the right arm.”

“It looks like she’s trying to hide a withered arm, but despite being exiled to a colony on the edge of town, she believes in living glamorously,” storied tigerrouge.

Benn98 wondered, “Why didn’t they let the weird red hood/cape rest on her shoulders? It looks very odd and ultimately ruins what would’ve been an otherwise passable cover. I’m happy for Luna though.”

“Gorgeous! Luna needs more Vogue covers ASAP!!” bluestar wrote, showing the cover some love.

See more from Luna’s cover story and add your own two cents here.
