How to Wear Knee-High Socks the Prada Way

Miuccia Prada is known for two things: her feminism-touting collections and her all-over-the-placeness (recall the designer’s Fall 2017 runway, wherein ostrich feather separates walked alongside corduroy suits and knit bras). However, on the designer’s two most recent runways (Spring 2018 and Resort 2018), there was one very noticeable common thread: printed knee-high socks.

Some knee-high socks came paired with modernist kitten-heel slingbacks, others with pointy studded brogues, still others paired with the brand’s newly released Cloudbust sneakers (yes, like just about every other elite fashion house, Prada has hopped on the fashion sneaker train). In the latter case, the socks appeared a natural extension of the models’ pillowy, Velcro-strapped, chunky-soled shoes — which is to say, Prada went with tonal styling. It was almost as if the girls were wearing especially bulky over-the-knee boots.

The overall effect was certainly eye-catching (especially when paired with the brand’s tailored shorts and pieced-together shirts), but it’s actually one of the easier, more minimalist ways to wear statement socks — particularly those that rise to the knee. Just ask Rihanna, whose latest Fenty campaign shows the singer clad in baby blue knee-highs, matching velour sweatpants and coordinating kitten heels. Or former VFiles/current Helmut Lang intern Sabrina Fuentes, who looked every bit the school-age fashion minion in white knee-high socks, white-trimmed baby pink Converse and a perfectly coordinated striped knit/mini skirt look.

How to Prevent Sexual Harassment at Your Law Firm

Sexual harassment certainly exists in the legal world, as we’ve recently reported. So what can you do if you’re running a firm and you want make sure such incidents are not part of your workplace at all? There are various ways for a law firm to make it clear to all employees that sexual harassment will not be tolerated.

Here, some leading experts share how to do just that:

Be a good role model.
If you’re in any position of power at a law firm, check your own behavior. “Remember, you are setting the tone for the entire organization,” says Barbara Walters, president of the HR Advantage, who has led a harassment prevention investigation committee for 13 years. Adds Laura Handrick, a human resources expert who has served as the human resources director in Fortune 100 companies, “The higher level the leader, the more likely they are to behave in inappropriate ways because they think ‘who’s going to report me?’ So if you’re that leader who thinks it’s okay to disparage females and gay people or tease office workers, just stop. Just because employees are afraid to report you, that doesn’t mean they won’t have a concern with your behavior. And you might not know until they quit… and you’re hit with a lawsuit.”

Create a clear sexual harassment policy.
If someone is sexually harassed at your firm, he or she should have a clear understanding of the proper steps to take to report the incident. “Have a clear, succinct, and documented harassment policy which covers verbal, physical, and emotional harassment,” says Kristen Nielsen Donnelly, MSW, PhD, a social science researcher in Philadelphia. Such a policy might be in an employee handbook, for instance. “This should clearly state whom the individual should report to and what the consequences of behavior may be. ‘Zero tolerance’ means nothing unless you define it”

Maintain an open-door policy.
It’s essential that everyone at the firm knows they can speak freely about the perceived incident or incidents that they regard as sexual harassment, says Gary S. Young, an employment lawyer in New Jersey. Also, if you have people on staff who administer the policy—such as an HR staff—make sure there’s at least one woman on the committee so all employees feel comfortable reporting issues, suggests Steven Adler, who has practiced employment law for 35 years and is co-chair of his firm’s labor and employment law practice group in New Jersey.

Take stock of your company’s culture.
It’s important to know what kind of work environment people on staff are experiencing. “Hire a consulting firm that specializes in organizational analysis to assess if your company/firm has a culture of harassment,” says Dr. Donnelly, “Another great way to discover what is actually going on within your organization is to conduct a completely anonymous employee survey,” suggests Cynthia Fenton, who has 15 years of experience in litigation and employment compliance.

Train all employees.
Many experts recommend that you conduct formal policy training or anti-harassment training sessions for everyone on staff each year. “Offering such an annual training program keeps the policy top of mind and helps people learn about any new litigation or statutes related to sexual harassment,” says Handrick. “For example, this year, gender neutral restrooms became an issue in the media, and several states have enacted policies against pregnancy discrimination and discrimination against individuals on the basis of sexual identity.”

Most importantly, make sure everyone on staff shows up to such training—even the managing partner(s) and executive committee. The managing partner might even speak to “make it very clear to all in attendance that this type of behavior will not be tolerated,” suggests Adler. “I recall an occasion when I was conducting training at a large company New York City when the CEO stood up, got everyone’s undivided attention, and said that the company would not hesitate to terminate any employee, no matter how high in the food chain, if he or she was found to have harassed any other employee.  That is precisely the message an employer, including law firms, should want to send to staff members.”

Act swiftly.
If someone reports sexual harassment, don’t wait a few weeks to see how things play out. Respond immediately to every incident. “Set and enforce a ‘zero tolerance’ policy for harassing behavior,” says Walters. “Delaying or doing nothing is equal to condoning poor behavior.  In other words, any exception you make sets a precedent and opens you up for more of the same.” Create a committee to investigate claims and harassment complaints, and then always respond to such complaints as quickly as possible.

Look beyond your firm.
Of course, you want to prevent any sexual harassment within your firm. However, don’t forget about your clients and other companies you might work with. “An often missed area of sexual harassment prevention is the training of all employees on the fact that they can and should report any harassment from non-employees– this includes lawyers from other firms, vendors that service the firm, or clients who may behave in an inappropriate way,” says Handrick. “Employees need to know that management will address these issues, up to and including terminating the client or vendor relationship, if the harassment does not stop.”

Choosing the right shade of concealer

One of the biggest concerns is how to conceal dark circles under the eyes. Dark circles make us look tired and even the coolest hairstyle or the prettiest red lipstick in the world won’t divert attention from them (trust us, we’ve tried). This is where your trusted concealer hits the stage. For the undereye area, be sure to select a shade that is one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone or the foundation you are using. The same shade won’t do much for brightening or giving you that fresh look and if you go to light, you’ll end up with an obvious white circle around the eye area, no matter how well you blend. When choosing a concealer for this area, pick one with satin-type coverage that has discreet highlighting properties – this ensures a light-reflective finish that further disguises shadowed areas and gives an overall younger look to the eye.

To camouflage dark spots, scars or acne, choose a shade that is an exact match for the color of your foundation – this will make it blend into your foundation seamlessly, giving you that smooth and complete coverage, so go for a really well pigmented one.

Types of concealers

There are three main types of concealer to choose from: liquid, stick and cream. Here’s how to know which is the best concealer for your skin type and coverage needs.

Liquid concealer is one of the most common formulations because it works for all skin types, except extremely dry skin. Best results can be achieved when this type of concealer is used on normal, combination, oily and sensitive skin. It provides buildable coverage, which ranges from light to full. They usually come with an applicator stick or a built-in brush that makes it easy to apply. You can also use your fingers, makeup sponge or a concealer brush to get flawless coverage results.

Stick concealer has a thick, creamy texture which is semi-solid and because of its richness, both in pigmentation and texture, it gives best results when used on skin that tolerates (or needs) a bit of nourishment — normal, dry and sensitive skin. You can apply it by swiping it directly on the area that needs camouflaging and blend it in seamlessly using a concealer brush or a makeup sponge.

Cream concealer comes in a compact or a small pot and works for all skin types except oily. Because it’s creamy, it should be set in place with a powder. Creamy texture means it is easily blended into the skin using fingertips, sponge or a brush.

Brad Scores 53 Points in Round of 8 Opener

The playoff intensity was palpable at Martinsville Speedway, but amid all the drama and carnage, Brad Keselowski made it through with an outstanding start to the Round of 8.

The No. 2 Alliance Truck Parts Ford Fusion driver won both stages of the First Data 500 and nearly won his second race at the 0.526-mile track this season, though a late bump delivered by Chase Elliott in a battle for the lead sent BK sliding out of line and settling for a fourth-place finish.

“We had a really great Alliance Truck Parts Ford,” Brad said. “We were able to lead laps, win two stages and bring home a solid finish—and that’s something to be proud of.”

Brad led 104 laps and earned 53 points, second only to race-winner Kyle Busch. He remains in third in the Monster Energy Cup Series standings, 29 points ahead of the Round of 4 cutline.

Brad started seventh and showed right from the start that the Black and Yellow Deuce was a force to be reckoned with. By the first caution of the day at lap 36, Kes had moved into third place. The 2 Crew continued its stellar postseason, sending BK off in second place for the lap 45 restart. Within four laps, he had taken the lead for the first time on the day.

It wouldn’t be a Team Penske race if it wasn’t for a unique strategy call by Paul Wolfe. The No. 2 Crew chief brought Brad down pit road while the majority of the field stayed out at lap 89. The decision dropped Kes in 11th, but he used his fresh tires to drive all the way to the front and win Stage 1.

During Stage 2, the No. 2’s long-run speed was on display. The entire 130-lap stage stayed green, and just two laps before the Stage 2 yellow, Brad out-dueled Busch for his eighth stage win of the season.

Brad waged an outstanding battle with fellow playoff driver Elliot late in Stage 3. Wolfe hooked Brad up with an air pressure adjustment for the 35-lap final run. BK held his position from the outside line before putting the pressure on Elliott. After a fantastic six-lap battle, Brad used a little push from his teammate Joey Logano to vault past the No. 24 Chevrolet and into the lead with 29 laps to go.

While Kes built a comfortable cushion and set sail for the lead, a battle behind him changed the scope of the race. Busch made hard contact with the left-rear tire of Logano, causing heavy smoke to pour out of his No. 22 Ford. With smoke billowing out of the Team Penske machine, he kept remained on the track for several laps before spinning out, bringing the field to a caution with just seven laps to go.

BK chose the outside line for a restart with four laps to go, and after a hard battle on the restart, he was bumped out of line by Elliott.

“I just knew I got in the corner and he was inside of me and we just made contact,” BK said. “The track’s really slick for everybody on the restarts. I think we saw that it takes about five laps or more for everyone to get going, especially the leader. There was a lot of hard fighting here. It’s a short track, that’s what they’re about—hard fighting. You try not to take anyone out. Who’s to say what’s too far and what’s not.”

Brad slid back to seventh place, but just moments later, Elliott was spun out by Denny Hamlin, sparking overtime at The Paperclip. Kes restarted seventh for the two-lap finale. Similar to Elliott’s move on Brad earlier, Busch bumped his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Hamlin, out of line on the final restart and held off Martin Truex Jr. to win. Meanwhile, Hamlin couldn’t recover from the bump by Busch, and he spun out collecting nearly the entire field. Brad was one of the lucky few to skirt by to grab fourth place.

Brad walked away proud of his team’s performance, grabbing two stage wins and a Top 5 finish to start the Round of 8, but he knows that after coming up just shy of the Martinsville win, he’ll have to be at his best at Texas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway.

“Everyone’s just desperate,” BK said of the race. ” You’ve got two or three cars that are so much better than everybody else on the mile-and-a-halfs that this is our race to get it done, and I think we all know that.”
